About Me
Above: Close-up on Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, 1938
I, Terrence Kramer, was an American soldier born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1919, my mother`s pregnancy immediately following my father`s return from serving in the first World War. Growing up in many places, moving as my father was needed, I was taught how important serving my country was, and how wrong the beliefs of recent developments in Germany, such as the Nazi party, were.
I especially disliked the way that Italy`s leader, Benito Mussolini, had copied Adolf Hitler`s use of fascist dictatorship into his own nation, depriving Italian citizens of potential rights that had been, for a long time, second nature to Americans such as myself. This especially worried me because my best friend`s family was of Italian descent. I noticed that he was becoming quite depressed because some of his family, those that remained in Italy, were subject every day to Mussolioni`s immorality. When I caught the news of the United States government`s partnership with Great Britain, I jumped at the chance to become of service to humanity, just as my father was.
Unmarried, and with no true family obligations, I set out to be recruited by the Allied Powers. My decision was backed up by friends and family, especially my father. I enlisted in the U.S. Army as a G.I. in early 1943. Please press the button below to reach the page on the planning for our Allied attack on Italy.
